Avionics is a field that is well-regulated by the FAA and other government entities, but its a linear process like any other in that if you just keep according to the law, observe standard development practices and have the resources to do it, you can do it. Otherwise, it leads to a bottleneck in innovation in the industry. My father used to work for Leigh Instruments Ltd (a Canadian firm) btw. Back in the day I was very much involved in the mathematics and computer modelling of rocket guidance systems, and am still piecing together my research in this interesting area. I think I'll leave it at this, other than to post this Eclipse IDE image of a potential front-end (ie. touch and flat screen) interface to our proposed flight computer system. It programmed in JAVA, and we can port over the necessary algorithms to an approved hi-rel, tested environment to get it past the FAA, I think. Private rocket guidance is still a really new field so it, like anything, is just going to take time, energy, money and a whole lot of know-how.
